In a European comparison, Germany is in the Corona-crisis extremely well-positioned – from the intensive care bed capacity staff resources to the Tests. This is the result of a current study. However, based on testing in Germany not using its Potential.

A comparison between the status of the pandemic-event for Europe – this was the goal of Christiane Arentz and Frank Wild by the Scientific Institute of the Private health insurance (WIP). The authors have taken for the EU-15 member States under the magnifying glass. These include:

Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Finland, France, Greece, Great Britain, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Austria, Portugal, Sweden, Spain.

  • All the current info you will find in the Live-Ticker to the pandemic.

Intensive care beds

In Europe, there were very different conditions, as for example, the intensive care bed capacity. While the per 100,000 inhabitants in Germany 38,2 intensive care beds are available, in Portugal, and thus at the other end of the scale, only 4.2. However, the authors point out that “the Figures for the respective countries, the points from different time and from different sources, since there is no uniform Europe-wide coverage”.

It is interesting in terms of intensive care beds, but in particular, how many of them are not only available, but, in particular, free. In Germany, the authors of the study calculated a utilization rate of 64 percent. That is to say, per 100,000 people to 13.6-free beds had been available (as of: 16.6.).

Staff

The authors of the study determined also the human resources in European hospitals. While Denmark, Austria, France and Germany have an above average number of Doctors and nurses on 1000 inhabitants (in Germany midwives were included in the bill), there was, especially in Finland, in comparison, very little human resources.

In terms of the workload, Germany was also among the first places. “On a full-time employees, the hospital doctor, and 124 cases in the year, on a full-time nurse employed in 60 cases,” write Arentz and Wild.

Testing

Germany has been tested in comparison to other European countries, and in Relation to the inhabitants of less people on Covid-19, “would, however, have very high test capacities, not busy”. At the beginning of June there was, therefore, a capacity of one Million Tests per week. However, it has not been taken according to the authors, once the half in the claim.

Covid-19-Cases

The country with the least number of officially confirmed Infected – which have been so well tested – is Greece. Germany is located nearly 2000 per Million inhabitants in 5th place in the country comparison. At the conclusion of the Luxembourg follows with more than 6000 Infected per one Million inhabitants.

However, many people Covid be tested in Luxembourg-19-infections. “In contrast, some countries, which have below-average number of Infected test, also in comparison to other countries, relatively little,” write the authors of one of these countries, Germany also.

Deaths

An above average number of people died in the WIP according to a report in Belgium as a result of the virus infection, followed by the UK, Spain, Italy and Sweden. Especially a few Dead defendant, in contrast, Greece, Finland, Austria, Denmark and Germany. But even these Figures and the Figures of the Tests in context.

“Luxembourg, which has a Million inhabitants, is the most proven Infected, has to be reported, however, only an average of many fatalities. Since it is also the country with by far the highest Tests per inhabitant, it can be assumed that these Figures are the outbreak to happen relatively reliably reflect“, – stated in the WIP report.

Why are affected the countries been so different?

On this question, the authors of the WIP, type-study answers. As risk factors, which have played in a first wave already has a role, and in a further, also important, could be, to count:

  • Cluster infections
  • demographic risks, such as
    • the age of the population and household structures, so, for example, whether older people live with younger in a household
    • the age of the Infected

The age of the Infected in various countries, the authors have determined that, in particular, in Finland, more young people were infected with the Virus. About 60 percent of the people 50 years of age or younger. In Germany, there were almost 50 per cent. In Italy, however, the significant majority (approximately 70 percent) of the Covid-19 war-Affected older than 50 years.

The authors of the study come to the conclusion that Germany would be prepared in the event of a second wave well. However, they point out that the investigation “due to the ever-changing information”, can not provide final answers, but only an intermediate state. Also, the authors use different data sources for individual countries, which complicates the comparability.
