For further proof that celebrities are just like us — well, despite being millions of dollars richer — just look at the work they put in to stay friends with their exes.

Jennifer Lawrence And Marc Maron

Case in point: Jennifer Lawrence, who recently opened up about her feelings for ex-boyfriend Darren Aronofsky. “Darren’s wonderful. We’re very friendly exes,” Lawrence said on Marc Maron’s WTF podcast of the Mother! director. “I was in love with him for like, two years. I still love him very much.”

So what’s the key to staying friendly with a former fling? “I have a theory,” the Red Sparrow actress said. “I think it’s because I’m blunt. I don’t think that you can have any sort of bad relationship with anybody if you’re just blunt. Everybody always knows how you feel at all times and there’s no lying. It’s just honesty.”

Lawrence isn’t the only A-lister doling out tips to amicably breaking it off and keeping it that way. Here’s a little more ex-couples counseling, courtesy of Hollywood’s most familiar faces.

Jenny Slate And Chris Evans

In the case of the Parks & Recreation comedienne and the Captain America star — who dated for about a year after co-starring in 2017’s Gifted (and seem to be back together?) — the key to staying friends appeared to be saying the most complimentary, gushing things humanly possible to the press after the split. “She’s my favorite human,” Evans told People two months after the break-up.

“She’s the best. I’ve never, ever, ever met someone in my life who has a mastery of the English language the way she does. She’ll give you one sentence, and there’s no fat to it. You’re like, ‘You just chose such an unbelievable collection of words that beautifully articulate what you say.'”

Slate also had kind words for the Avengers actor after the two separated. “Chris is truly one of the kindest people I’ve ever met, to the point where sometimes I would look at him and it would kind of break my heart,” she told Vulture. “He’s like primary colors. He has beautiful, big, strong emotions, and he’s really sure of them. It’s just wonderful to be around. His heart is probably golden-colored, if you could paint it.”

Anna Faris And Chris Pratt

Though the nation came together in mourning after Faris and Pratt announced the end of their 18-year marriage, things seem pretty chummy between the two. Unsurprisingly, the key thing here appears to be remaining funny at all times.

“There is still so much laughter in our lives together, and he is so proud of me, still,” Faris told People. “We watched each other grow, and he still cracks me up all the time. And I think I crack him up — unless he’s a really good actor and great at faking laughter.”

Of course, it helps when a couple, celebrity or not, is able to put egos aside for the sake of a child — in this case, the pair’s five-year-old son, Jack. “We are great and there’s so much friendship and love,” Faris told Extra. “We surround Jack with love, and funny, kind, happy people, and as a result, he is really happy.”

Gwyneth Paltrow And Chris Martin

While we’re never going to support Goop’s ill-advised vagina crystals or the music of Coldplay, the “conscious uncoupling” of Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin is still the poster child for how to stay friends with your celebrity ex. The main takeaway is to just sort of act like you were never romantically involved. Easy as that. “It’s like we’re still a family, but not a couple,” Paltrow told Marie Claire Australia. “I think we are better as friends than we were [married]…I feel lucky because Chris has been willing to push himself for the sake of the kids and help me co-create this new family.”

Since splitting in 2016, Paltrow has vacationed with Martin in South America, cheered him on during his Super Bowl 50 halftime show, and — against all odds and human logic — brought her ex-husband to a somehow-not-uncomfortable brunch with her new boyfriend, American Horror Story producer Brad Falchuk.
