Let’s be honest, your workplace is never going to be a haven of serenity, but research published in the International Journal of Workplace Health Management suggests that there’s one way to make it a little less stressful.

The small study analysed the commutes of 123 adults, their perceived stress levels and perceived mood, and it found that those who ride a bike to work are less tense than those who drive.

“Recent research has shown that early morning stress and mood are strong predictors of their effect later in the day,” explains lead study author Stéphane Brutus. “They can shape how subsequent events are perceived, interpreted, and acted upon for the rest of the day.”

While the study does not explain the reason why cyclists reported feeling less stressed than drivers, some previous research suggests that the psychical activity involved plays a role.

That and you’re not spending your morning stuck in rage-inducing traffic jams and screaming at dodgy drivers.
