Abby Lee Miller is lucky to be alive after being diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer back in April 2018. And while the Dance Moms star is “cancer-free” now, in a new interview, she shares just how close she came to dying.

Abby Lee sat down PeopleNow to promote her upcoming new season of Dance Moms: Resurrection, and revealed that, at one point, she overheard doctors tell her friends some extremely grave news.

“I was paralyzed from my neck down. I was in the fetal position, just talking, that was it, that was all I could do, and he did eight hours of emergency surgery,” Abby said of the first time she met her surgeon. “He looked at my three friends that were there and he said, ‘We have 10 minutes or we’re going to lose her.'”

Abby was eventually diagnosed with Burkitt lymphoma, an aggressive form of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, which is a rare type of cancer that affects the body’s blood and immune system. But she originally had surgery for what doctors thought was a rare spinal infection.

And it turns, out Abby had an idea what was going on in her body: “He didn’t have an MRI to look at, he didn’t have a CT scan, he didn’t know whether he needed to go in the back or the front,” Abby said. “And I remember yelling, ‘My back! My back! Go in the back! It’s my back!” and he went into my back and now I have an 18-inch scar down my spine.”

Since being diagnosed with Burkitt lymphoma, Abby has had two surgeries, many rounds of chemotherapy, and is learning to walk again—something she hopes to achieve after another surgery, during which Abby will have her knee replaced. “I’ve had two different therapists say there’s no doubt,” Abby said, in reference to walking again. Abby’s set to have her surgery in July, after which, she plans “to be walking by September,” she said.

Abby has come so far since her near-death experience. If anyone can do it, she can. Abby’s new season of Dance Moms, Dance Moms: Resurrection, premieres June 4 on Lifetime.
