The Corona-pandemic keeps the world in suspense: More than 15 million people have been infected with the Coronavirus, 206.242 of them in Germany. The United States reported almost daily new record numbers.

The statistics authority Eurostat has calculated the number of deaths in the period between March and may (calendar week 10 to 22) in 24 European countries and came to a startling conclusion. According to the authority were reported in this period, a total of 160,000 deaths more than in the same period four years earlier (2016-2019). Further, the number of deaths had increased in the first week of April (week 14) is particularly strong. In this period alone, the number of deaths was in the surveyed countries according to Eurostat, at around 120,000.

The Figures do not give an indication of how high the Corona pandemic caused excess mortality in Europe-even if the Figures as such, specify first, what the deaths are due. With the consideration of the excess mortality is independent of the officially reported Corona-death cases to examine the extent to which the death rate in the population in a given period of time.

However, the data also show significant differences between the States. While in Spain, Italy and Belgium recorded a significant increase compared with the average of the previous years, there were about Bulgaria or Slovakia, and even fewer deaths.

Also important are: the UK, the complain according to the Johns Hopkins University is the third-most Corona-related deaths in the world, was not taken into account in the statistics. Otherwise, it would be the number much higher.
