Swedish YouTuber Göran Winblad has always enjoyed starting his day with a morning run, saying it helps him feel more energized and be more productive. “Even if it’s a short run, just 10 or 20 minutes, I do better work and I can keep focused for so much longer if I’ve had some physical activity to start the day,” he says. So at the beginning of 2020, he resolved to start every single day with a run, for the whole year.

Winblad started the challenge after he was diagnosed with a heart condition, and his doctors advised him against continuing with his more intense workouts. “I figured if I could at least do low-intensity training, I could start every day with a short run,” he says. “That way, I would get the feeling I was still doing something I love. And it was good for my mind, to get that feeling I was training.”

For the most part, Winblad found it quite easy to build this habit and keep up his morning routine, and found that even on days when he struggled with motivation in his work, “at least I did one good thing with my day.”

He was also worried that he’d end up getting injured, as he had previously never gone a whole year without somehow hurting himself in his training, but he was able to make it to the end of 2020 injury-free.

“Of course I’ve had some aches here and there, but it has never been something that has completely taken me off from running,” he says. In fact, he believes that his morning runs may have been beneficial in injury prevention: “With these short runs, every day you load the tendons, the muscles, all the different structures that need to be strong, and keeping this consistency is a really good thing.”

Upon completing the 365-day challenge, Winblad is so pleased with how it’s made him feel that he intends to continue running every single morning in 2021. “I see no reason to stop this habit that has been so good for me, and has improved my life in so many ways,” he says.
