Eddie Hall, former World’s Strongest Man and record-breaking lifter, has his sights set on a new ambition: dominating the world of arm wrestling, and in particular, trouncing middleweight champion Rob Vigeant Jr. Last month, Hall spent the day training with former arm wrestling pro Neil Pickup as part of his preparation process.

He followed that up this week by dropping a chest day video with Canadian arm wrestler Devon Garratt, who made history when he won world championships in both the left and right-handed categories in the same year.

Hitting up the incline bench press, Garratt manages to lift 110 kgs. “When I was a younger guy, the most I ever pushed was 365,” he says. “A lot of our guys can bench… I’m like the weak one in the crew.” Which leads to his first tidbit of arm wrestling wisdom: it’s not all about brute strength.

“You would think that the arm wrestling world champion would be on par with me in terms of benching and pressing and triceps and everything,” says Hall. “It just goes to show how technical Devon is, and how strong he is in the wrist and elbow… I mean, I can bench three times that, but Devon could put me down easily.”

After a round of dumbbell presses, they move onto cable crossovers, where Garratt is able to use the machine to coach Hall in his grip activation and technique. The challenge for the barrel-chested Hall specifically is having the mobility and accuracy to pull his arm as close to his center as possible.

When Hall’s match against Vigeant will take place, given that the Global Armwrestling League event won’t be happening amid the pandemic, remains to be seen. But when they do finally go bicep to bicep, Hall will have had plenty of time to practice.
