Walk in a nutshell

A canalside canter that whisks you through two millennia of history in the heart of the city.

Directions

1. Walk out of Manchester Piccadilly station and down the Station Approach ramp. Continue along the main road for 100m until you reach the canal. Turn left on to the road that runs along the canal and follow the stairs down to the Rochdale canal towpath.

2. Continue walking west away from Piccadilly. The canal threads its way through central Manchester.

3. After three locks, continue under the short Deansgate tunnel, past the lock and into the Castlefield complex.

4. Head back up to Liverpool Road and left along Deansgate.

5. Follow Bridge Street until it leads on to John Dalton Street. This road will take you past Manchester town hall, where it becomes Princess Street. Carry on past the town hall until you reach a crossroads with Portland Street.

6. Turn left along Portland Street and follow the path until you reach Piccadilly Gardens. Turn right at the gardens and then left along Ducie Street. This will bring you back to the towpath of the Rochdale canal.

7. Without crossing the canal follow it under two bridges until you reach the footbridge at Redhill Street.

8. Cross over and head back along the Rochdale canal to the start of your route.
