Just in case you’re living under a rock with limited access to the Internet, the Duchess of Cambridge gave birth to her third child this morning, a healthy baby boy. Just seven hours later, she and Prince William left the Lindo Wing at St Mary’s and headed home to Kensington Palace.

If you’re thinking that sounds swift, you’d be right. On average, UK mums spend a day and a half in hospital while in Australia, the average maternity hospital stay for vaginal deliveries is roughly two and a half days.

But there’s a few reasons why she was en route ASAP. Firstly, the excitable press and public surrounding the hospital doesn’t make for a relaxing recovery, for Kate or the other mums on the ward.

In fact, some sources speculated that Kate was even considering a home birth so that she could spend private, quality time with the newest addition to her family.

Secondly, the royal has a huge range of resources available to her and her new son. According to the Daily Mail, Kate’s birth team included 20 doctors led by obstetrician Guy Thorpe-Beeston and gynaecologist Alan Farthing. The team also featured experts like anaesthetists, paediatricians, lab technicians, and backups in case anyone couldn’t make it for the birth.

With help like that, we’d be heading home to get into our trackie dacks pretty quickly too.
