Thanks to pop culture, sex ed classes and our parents’ excessive concern, most of us have it drummed into us from a young age that getting busy without protection will, undoubtedly, end in a baby.
But more often than not, getting pregnant isn’t as easy as we’re led to believe.
Case in point: this latest survey by Channel Mum. Earlier this year, 1,194 parents were asked via the online forum to share just how long it took them to conceive.
The average? 78 sex sessions. Which, when divided by 13 (the number of times each couple reported getting down and dirty each month whilst actively ‘trying’) equates to a total of six months.
It’s important to note, however, that this figure is in no way definitive. Some people get pregnant first shot, while for others, it takes more time.
“We’re used to thinking that if we try hard enough for something, we can attain it,” psychologist Jessica Zucker tells Women’s Health. “But that’s not always the case with pregnancy.”
“You can get as straight-A about it as you want, but there’s no knowing when and if it will happen.”
