“You must become very aware when you eat and eat mindfully, keeping your entire focus on your food. You should also reduce your dairy products such as cheese, milk and cream as dairy products contain lactose and before this can be absorbed into the bloodstream from your gut and ferments, giving symptoms such as gas and bloating.
“You should increase your fibre as its known for its action on the bowel and help with constipation. Fibre binds to water and increases the bulk of your stools, so that its easier to eliminate from the body and help with problems like bloating and flatulence.”
Doctor Glenville added: “Avoid addictive drinks such as alcohol, tea, coffee and cola’s. Because they are part of everyday life we tend to forget their addictive properties.
“If you decide to cut caffeine and fizzy drinks from your daily routine, you can minimise the possible side effects by cutting down slowly over a period of a few weeks and use healthy alternatives such as herbal teas including dandelion tea and turmeric lattes.”
Some researchers say exercise helps reduce symptoms of bloating primarily because physical activity supports the passage of gas through one’s digestive system.
Severe bloating may cause serious symptoms such as:
- Blood in your stool
- Noticeable weight loss
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea
- Fever
- Heartburn
