The study involved 1,114 people, between the ages of 18 and 81.
For every 10 grams of soluble fibre eaten, the study reports a 3.7 percent lower risk of gaining harmful belly fat.

Researchers from the University of North Carolina wanted to know if the consumption of fibre had an impact on visceral fat levels.
Testing 559 adolescents aged 14 to 18, visceral fat levels were measured using “magnetic resonance imaging”.
Their diets were assessed, with the researchers concluding that greater consumption of fibre is associated with lower levels of visceral fat.
Supporting this evidence, researchers from the Keck School of Medicine, California, conducted a longitudinal study over two years.

They found that small reductions in fibre intake over this time period had a profound effect on increasing levels of visceral fat.
