The Borna Virus can kill people, is not known. Now, doctors have found, on the basis of new data that it has given in the past few years, apparently, far more deaths due to dangerous Borna virus as accepted. A province is particularly affected.

An infection with the so-called Borna virus died in Germany in recent years, far more people than in the past. The causative agent was in Bavaria retroactively in the brain of a deceased patient samples has been demonstrated, researchers of the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institute (FLI) and the University of Regensburg in the journal "The Lancet Infectious Diseases".

All known Borna cases were in Bavaria

That farm animals such as horses and sheep with the Borna-infected disease and it can die, is already much longer known. The only known Reservoir of the pathogen in the Field shrew (Crocidura leucodon), in which the infection causes no serious symptoms.

Borna virus detected, especially in the South of Germany

The mice excrete the Virus in urine, feces and saliva can infect other animals and humans. Direct Transfers from human to human is not known.

BoDV-1 in Germany in Bavaria, Thuringia, Saxony-Anhalt and adjacent Parts of neighbouring provinces. Cases of Borna disease in horses, sheep and other farm animals there are also in Austria, Switzerland and Liechtenstein regularly.
