Staph Infection- the name doesn’t sound very pleasant and neither are the symptoms. Caused by bacteria found on your skin, staph infections are high contagious with painful and irritating symptoms.
(We aren’t over exaggerating…)
Symptoms include boils and oozing blisters, nausea, vomiting, stomach aches. In rare and serious causes, the infection can reach into your bloodstream and cause fevers, joint and muscle pain.
Sarah Stevenson, aka Sarah’s Day, a health and fitness blogger from Cronulla is known for her outgoing personality, vlogs on YouTube and sharing her daily life adventures on Instagram and Snapchat. She shares every aspect of her life on social media, so when she contracted a staph infection, there was a new side of wellbeing that she introduced to her social media followers.
“Originally I thought it was just an ingrown hair. I had a noticeable red lump on my knee that began to get more inflamed and sensitive as the hours went on.”
Sarah tried to pop it, noticed liquid coming out of the sore, yet left to worry about it until after one of her YouTube meetings.
“I was almost immobile. My knee had swollen up to the size of a grapefruit, it was bright red and burning hot… within 2 hours, my entire right calf was filled with fluid and I could barely walk.”
To treat staph infections, you need to see a doctor as antibiotics are required and in most cases, drainage of the infection is required. Confused?! Sarah shares what it was like to be given at-home care.
“After the emergency hospital visit, I was placed on a IV antibiotic… I stayed home for the next 5 days and received at-home care from the community nurse who injected me daily with [my] prescribed antibiotics.”
Sarah thought after her first round of treatment the worst was behind her but this was when everything started spiralling out of control for Sarah. The infection came back not once but three times over the next two months.
Doctors finally identified that the infection was resistant to the initial antibiotics prescription. “I was then scheduled to receive at-home care from the community nurse, rock a cannula in my arm for a week and receive injections of a new antibiotics that (fingers crossed) would kill my reoccurring staph infection.”
Antibiotic resistance is a serious issue in regards to staph infections, with Sarah not being the only one to experience such difficulties, always listen to a trusted healthcare professional.
Staph Infections are treatable; however, it can be severely draining for those infected. Sarah shared her hardships with her 477k YouTube subscribers and 315k Instagram followers. The fitness side of her lifestyle came to a dramatic halt, just after the release of her 8-week lifestyle challenge ‘Sweat It To Shred It’.
The most important lesson she learned?
“Seek medical attention immediately… the longer you leave something, the more serious and critical it becomes!”
