Stan Browney—or just “Browney” as he’s known to his one million subscribers on YouTube—is no stranger to a pushup challenge, whether he’s trying to set a world record for “magic” pushups or attempting to pull off a “floating” pushup that went viral on TikTok, which he declared the “hardest pushup in the world.”
In one of his most recent fitness videos, Browney challenged three of his friends to a 30-day pushup transformation, during which they had to complete 200 reps a day, and showed off the results. Not to be outdone, Browney decided to one-up his friends and take on an even more ambitious challenge of his own: 333 pushups for 30 days, with a few bonus reps thrown in to give him an even 10,000 pushups over the course of a month.
Is this an advisable fitness regimen for, well, anyone? Of course not. (Browney could’ve simply asked Olympic runner Nick Symmonds, who found himself reeling in agony a few weeks ago after doing 300 pushups a days for 30 days.) As Browney himself acknowledges in the caption, “You’re probably thinking: That is way too much. That can’t be healthy. Yeah. You’re right. But for the sake of science, I had to try it.”
And try it he does. At first, things go about as well as you’d expect: By day 5, Browney’s in rough shape, and not making progress as quickly as he’d hoped. Without any rest days, his body has no time to recover, and it shows. “This is awful,” he confesses on day 7. At the halfway point, however, he starts see progress, with the pushups getting “easier and easier.” Three weeks in, and his time to complete 300 reps is down to under 12 minutes, a new record.
After fighting through much, much more pain in the final week, Browney finally shows off his results: At the start of the challenge, he weighed 80 kilograms (about 175 pounds) and by the end, he’s at 79.1—not a significant difference. His chest size, however, grew from 110 centimeters to nearly 113 centimeters, a modest gain.
