UFC fighter Conor McGregor is hard at work training, and he’s sharing the knowledge he’s gained with his fans and followers. The controversial former champ provided a few pointers about pullups in his latest Instagram post.
“I want to show you a little trick, what I like to utilize for pullups,” he says in the beginning of the video.
His tip is more of an advocacy for one particular style of pullup. “Obviously there’s many grips for the pullup,” he says. McGregor is focused on what he calls the biceps grip (a chinup), which he notes that most people might consider it “the easiest grip.” That type of thinking is misguided, he says. “The truth is, whatever you start on, whatever one you work on, whatever one you put the most work in is the easiest one.”
The fighter’s biggest tip for the biceps pullup is to bring the elbows inward.
“When I go down I want to emphasize the elbow coming in, so I’m almost trying to touch elbows,” he says. “And I also want to extend the arm fully. And as you come up, bring the elbows in.”
He compares this inward position to the “guarding” position he takes during fights.
“Good stuff,” he says. McGregor is no fan of half-reps either—he wants to see his fans to maintain tension throughout the entire rep, up and down.
If you’re looking to perfect your pullup form, focus on keeping tension in your back, using your shoulder blades to pull along with your arms, and finishing through the rep at the top with a strong squeeze of the shoulders. Also, don’t forget to maintain a strong position through your torso and glutes—for strict reps, your core should be engaged too, almost like a hanging plank.
