Mayo Clinic, in Rochester, Minnesota, and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, in Los Angeles, California, remain the best US hospitals for gastroenterology and gastrointestinal (GI) surgery, according to US News & World Report’s latest rankings.

These two hospitals were also number 1 and 2, respectively, in last year’s rankings.

In the magazine’s 2022–2023 rankings, UCLA Medical Center, Los Angeles, holds the number 3 spot, up from number 4 last year, while Cleveland Clinic, in Ohio, falls from number 3 last year to number 4 this year.

NYU Langone Hospitals, New York City, holds the number 5 spot, which is the same as last year.

Keck Medical Center of USC, Los Angeles, broke into the top 10 for gastroenterology this year, jumping six spots in the rankings to number 6, up from number 12 last year.

Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Chicago, sits at number 7 this year, up from number 9 last year, while Houston Methodist Hospital is number 8 this year, up from number 10 last year.

Rounding out the latest top 10 hospitals for gastroenterology and GI surgery is Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, which fell from number 6 last year to number 10 this year.

“For patients considering their options for where to get care, the Best Hospitals rankings are designed to help them and their medical professionals identify hospitals that excel in the kind of care they may need,” Ben Harder, chief of health analysis and managing editor at US News, said in a news release.

Mayo Clinic Tops Overall

In the overall 2022–2023 rankings and ratings, US News compared more than 4500 hospitals across 15 specialties and 20 procedures and conditions.

As reported by Medscape Medical News, in the overall rankings of best hospitals, the Mayo Clinic claimed the top spot on the honor roll for the seventh consecutive year, followed by Cedars-Sinai Medical Center at number 2 and NYU Langone Hospitals at number 3.

Cleveland Clinic, in Ohio, holds the number 4 spot in the overall rankings, while Johns Hopkins Hospital, in Baltimore, Maryland, and UCLA Medical Center, in Los Angeles, tied for 5th place.

This year marks the 33rd edition of the magazine’s best hospitals rankings of hospitals overall and by key specialties.

According to a news release from US News, in determining the rankings, consideration is given to a variety of data provided by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, the American Hospital Association, professional organizations, and medical specialists.
