Love & Hip Hop Miami star Shay Johnson was hospitalized this weekend, and while she didn’t reveal what exactly is going on, the visit seemed pretty serious.

Shay posted a video of herself in a hospital bed and gown Saturday, with the caption, “Pray for me.” Since then, Shay has been updating her fans via Instagram Stories, where she revealed she also had to have a blood transfusion.

“Now I have to have a blood transfusion,” Shay said in an Instagram Story on Sunday night that showed a nurse inserting an IV into her arm. “My blood is low and I’m dizzy,” she added. The video also showed Shay’s mom and brother in the room with her for extra support.

Friends from Love & Hip Hop: Miami also showed Shay they were thinking about her. Fellow cast member Amara La Negra sent a flower arrangement to the hospital and even jumped to Shay’s defense when people got catty about her health condition in the comment section of The Shade Room’s Instagram, VH1 reported.

Hold on, a blood transfusion? Why would someone need one of those?

Just to reiterate: There are no clues as to why Shay would need a blood transfusion (a procedure where blood is given to you intravenously). Prior to her Instagram post Saturday, there were no signs of any health issues on her social media accounts.

It’s actually a pretty common procedure—each year almost five million Americans need blood transfusions, per the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute). Still, there are a few reasons why someone like Shay might need a blood transfusion.

Surgery is a main reason why someone might need a blood transfusion per the NHLBI, due to blood loss from an operation. Those who sustain serious injuries may also need blood transfusions to replace any blood lost during an accident or trauma.

Certain illnesses are also a big reason why someone might need a blood transfusion. Severe infections or liver disease, for example, may inhibit the body from making blood, per the NHLBI.

Illnesses that can cause anemia (a deficiency of red blood cells or hemoglobin) can also require a blood transfusion—those include illnesses like sickle cell anemia, which is most common in those of African or Hispanic background, according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Bleeding disorders like hemophilia or thrombocytopenia may also require a blood transfusion.

Basically, there are lots of reasons why someone might need a blood transfusion—and until Shay gives her fans any more information on what’s going on with her health, all anyone can do is hope that she starts feeling better ASAP.
