Tony Jeffries retired from boxing with an undefeated record and an Olympic bronze medal. Now, he shares his insight and experience as a fighter on his YouTube channel, imparting advice on technique and power for newcomers to the sport. In a recent video, Jeffries demonstrates three of his best self-defense tips, for situations where you find yourself in a fight and want to end the situation and get out of there as quickly as possible.

Punch them in the solar plexus

“If you have ever been hit there, you will know that the pain there is horrible, it’s really, really bad,” says Jeffries. “What this does, this will finish them off. Hit someone there hard, they’re done, the fight is over.” While this tactic has the benefit of incapacitating your opponent, he adds that it is less likely to do any serious harm than if you were to punch them full strength in the face.

Open palm slap

“An open palm slap to the head can do some serious damage if you rotate your hips,” he says. “They’re not expecting it… The reason I’m doing this rather than punching, while punching I can really damage my hand.”

The “Stockton Slap” is a surprisingly effective move, and is popular among certain MMA fighters including Conor McGregor, Max Holloway, and the Diaz brothers. Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson has said that the open-handed slap, in addition to disorienting your opponent, carries a psychological component: namely, getting slapped out is a hugely embarrassing way to lose a fight.

Headbutt

This move is perfect for if you have limited mobility in your arms or hands for any reason, for instance, if you’re being restrained or clinched. “Aim for the nose,” Jeffries advises. “Blast in that headbutt, straight into his nose, if you can’t get your hands loose.”
