He may have been called “fat Cavill” at school, but according to Henry Cavill the taunts about his weight didn’t end in the playground. The Witcher star has revealed that as a young actor, he lost out on the role of James Bond because of his weight.

Speaking to MH US, Cavill revealed that as part of his screen test for the role of Bond in Casino Royale, he had to walk out of a bathroom wrapped in a towel to reenact a scene from one of the Sean Connery-era films.

“I remember the director, Martin Campbell, saying, ‘Looking a little chubby there, Henry’,” says Cavill. “I didn’t know how to train or diet. And I’m glad Martin said something, because I respond well to truth. It helps me get better.”

At the time of Campbell’s comment, Cavill was just a 23-yer-old jobbing actor who had yet to make his name as one of Hollywood’s most jacked stars. He had also yet to experience the kind of arduous training for which he has since made his name and now relishes. “I’m representing important characters here,” he says. “I don’t want to be a dumpy Geralt or a fat Superman.”

Still, even though his weight may have been the deciding factor last time, the role of 007 is about to become available again, and Cavill is keen to become Bond. We’re sure the film’s producers won’t be as quick to discount the man formally known as “fat Cavill” this time around.
