For the last 30 days, YouTubers Harry James and Ricky Benang have been working on developing six-pack abs through a daily workout routine consisting of plank holds and leg raises. In a results video which went live yesterday, they unveiled the results of their efforts.

“I think I’m about 4 pounds down,” says Harry, who has achieved a small but visible reduction in belly fat. “Maybe a little bit more defined.” Ricky, who was leaner to begin with, has more clearly cut fat in his midsection. “I got a lot of that fat off, especially in the waist, burned a lot of fat off, burned a few inches off,” he says. “Not six-pack abs yet, but definitely got some definition, which is great.”

While the aim of the 30-day experiment was partly to achieve visual results, both Harry and Ricky have just as importantly made progress in building strength and muscle.

On the first day of the challenge, Harry was able to hold the plank for 2 minutes 30 seconds. On the 30th day, his endurance has improved, and he is ecstatic as he hits his target of a 5-minute plank. “Actually, there was a point there about 4 minutes in when I totally thought I wasn’t going to be able to do it,” he says. “But I got to the 5-minute mark, and I honestly could have kept going… 50 percent increase! I doubled the amount I could do on Day 1 to the amount I could do on Day 30, and that’s honestly the most important thing.”

Ricky, meanwhile, was able to hold a 5-minute plank on Day 1, and on Day 30 his time has increased to 11 minutes. “Even though I’ve improved, these planks do not feel any easier,” he says.

“If I’ve learned anything over the last 30 days, it’s the importance of not judging ourselves,” he continues. “Sometimes you’ve just got to accept the fact that slow progress is better than no progress, and it doesn’t mean you won’t get there eventually.”
