You may have noticed we’re a little fanatical about our SPF here at Allure. (Rightfully so — skin cancer is the most common kind of cancer despite the fact that it’s so preventable.) But lo and behold, there’s one “sunburn” we’re actually kind of into thanks to this eye-makeup look that's weirdly awesome.

Terry Barber, director of makeup artistry at M.A.C. Cosmetics, posted three sunburn-inspired eye makeup looks to Instagram that look exactly like three degrees of sunburn — raw, rawer, and rawest. Maybe it’s the fact that we know no damaging UV rays were used in the making of this look, or maybe Barber is just that good, but the scorched looks are actually kind of…cool?

We know, we know, it sounds super weird, but bear with us. In his post, the extraordinarily talented Barber blames the end-of-summer heatwave for the “feast of color inspiration” he created using M.A.C.’s Pro Eye Palette in The Romantic, a red and violet collection of “smooth-as-butter” cream shadows that, as you can see from Barber’s three degrees of heat, are totally buildable.

"I’ve always had a fascination with a rouged eye. From classical portraits, to ravers in the nineties it represents the kind of brave, romantic grunginess that I love," Barber tells Allure. To turn up the heat, Barber used three shades of M.A.C. Mineralize Blushers — in Like Me Love Me, Happy-Go-Rosy, and Flirting With Danger — on top of the cream shadows. "Being British, I see a lot of sunburn, and the various levels of recovery provide an interesting spectrum of raw pinks and reds," he says.

In addition to being the only sunburn we’ll ever approve of, the look also expertly answers the question of what to do with all of the red-hued eyeshadow palettes coming out this fall. Bring on the heatwave.
